One of the true fun things about fantasy drawing is being able to create entirely new creature; here I have combined, a seabird skull, an orang-utan and pure imagination to produce 'the dark beast.'
He is not really a member of the other coastline..but he could be!

I was approached in 2014 to hang an exhibition of my fantasy art at West Cape Howe winery, Mt Barker WA; as I didn't want to part with my original Masters drawings I re drew and rendered four images and added two canvases for some colour. The pencil images have been modified slightly from my originals.

the other coastline : masters of arts practice (drawing and illustration)

The other coastline is not based on any narrative, it is a series of ideas relating to a fantasy environment; this environment is largely akin to ours, the components that form it are the same, flotsam, jetsam, flora and fauna, it is the fusion of these elements to create new species that separates it. Many of these creatures couldn’t be successful outside their fantasy world, but portraying them realistically in pencil images helps to transform them from fantastical ideas into believable, if not possible life forms. These new creatures are the environment of the other coastline, not an added element but an organic form of recycling that encourages the survival of an environment, which despite its differences from what we find acceptable in our environment, is believable.

cast of characters

When we wander along a deserted beach it is easy to imagine the existence of another world; a world like that of Brian Froud or J.R.R. Tolkien but where houses are built from beach deteris and flotsam. A fantasy world of characters that we can’t see. I am endeavouring to illustrate this world using shells, flotsam and images, using Australian beaches as my reference.
